I love watching movies, although I haven’t really had much time lately to watch as much as I would like. When I do, I throw on a super-size t-shirt, put my hair in a messy bun, grab some Kleenex, a menu, and I binge watch for a whole day! My favorite movie genres are Romance, Suspense, Drama, Comedy, Action, and Documentary. Basically, I like almost every genre except for horror; I don’t need that type of negativity in my life. 🙂 While I love to watch entertaining stuff, I also like to watch a movie after the credits roll; I can walk away with something more substantial and thought-provoking than just a few good laughs, a couple of tears or having my adrenaline pumping.
When I first got this post idea, I went through three lists of “100 Best Movies“, online to jog my memory and help me formulate my own personal list. Ten minutes in and already I exceeded the list of 35 that I initially wanted to create. Now I had to go back and start the weighing of which ones I liked best and it got so overwhelming that I simply gave up. I ended up revisiting the idea and thought to myself why was I going through a list in the first place? If I can’t remember it off the top of my head maybe it didn’t leave a lasting impression on me.
Instead of creating the list of my favorite movies; I’ve decided to create a list of my classics, a list of movies I love to watch, and never get tired of. I even picked from different genres for a better balance. Finally, I got the list together. Now the next struggle was putting them in the order I favor them from least to most and even that I couldn’t come up with. So without further ado; here’s the list in tentative order of my classic movies to watch.
1. Indecent Proposal (1993) – A billionaire offers $1,000,000 to a young married couple for one night with the wife.
2. Fatal Attraction (1987) – A married man’s one-night stand comes back to haunt him when that lover begins to stalk him and his family.
3. Pretty Woman (1990) – A man in a legal but hurtful business needs an escort for some social events, and hires a beautiful prostitute he meets… only to fall in love.
4. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) – Tells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backwards with bizarre consequences.
5. Catch Me If You Can (2002) – The story of ‘Frank Abagnale Jr., before his 19th birthday, successfully forged millions of dollars’ worth of checks while posing as a Pan Am pilot, a doctor, and legal prosecutor as a seasoned and dedicated FBI agent pursues him.
6. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) – Based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stock-broker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government.
7. Do the Right Thing (1989) – On the hottest day of the year on a street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, everyone’s hate and bigotry smolders and builds until it explodes into violence.
8. Coming to America (1988) – An extremely pampered African prince travels to Queens, New York City, and goes undercover to find a wife whom he can respect for her intelligence and will.
9. Set it Off (1996) – Desperation drives four inner-city women (Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Vivica A. Fox, Kimberly Elise) to bank robbery in Los Angeles, then they start mistrusting one another.
10. John Q (2002) – John Quincy Archibald takes a hospital emergency room hostage when his insurance won’t cover his son’s heart transplant.
11. Miracle on 34th Street (1973 & 1994) – A lawyer and a little girl must prove that a man claiming to be Santa Claus is the real thing.
12. To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) – Atticus Finch, a lawyer in the Depression-era South, defends a black man against an undeserved rape charge, and his children against prejudice.
13. Basic Instinct (1992) – A violent, suspended police detective investigates a brutal murder, in which a manipulative and seductive woman could be involved.
14. Titanic (1997) – A seventeen-year-old aristocrat falls in love with a kind but poor artist aboard the luxurious, ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic.
15. The Sixth Sense (1999) – A boy who communicates with spirits that don’t know they’re dead seeks the help of a disheartened child psychologist.
16. Malcolm X (1992) – Biographical epic of the controversial and influential Black Nationalist leader, from his early life and career as a small-time gangster, to his ministry as a member of the Nation of Islam.
17. The Avengers (2012) – Earth’s mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.
18. Goodfellas (1990) – The story of Henry Hill and his life through the teen years into the years of mafia, covering his relationship with wife Karen Hill and his Mob partners Jimmy Conway and Tommy DeVitto in the Italian-American crime syndicate.
19. The Godfather (Part 1, 2 and 3) – The early life and career of Vito Corleone in 1920s New York is portrayed while his son, Michael, expands and tightens his grip on the family crime syndicate.
20. Forrest Gump (1994) – While not intelligent, Forrest Gump has accidentally been present at many historic moments, but his true love, Jenny Curran, eludes him.
21. Shrek (Parts 1, 2 and 3) – After his swamp is filled with magical creatures, Shrek agrees to rescue Princess Fiona for a villainous lord in order to get his land back.
22. Dirty Dancing (1987) – Spending the summer at a Catskills resort with her family, Frances “Baby” Houseman falls in love with the camp’s dance instructor, Johnny Castle.
23. Ghost (1990) – After a young man is murdered, his spirit stays behind to warn his lover of impending danger, with the help of a reluctant psychic.
24. The Fugitive (1993) – Dr. Richard Kimble, unjustly accused of murdering his wife, must find the real killer while being the target of a nationwide manhunt lead by a seasoned US Marshall.
25. Remember the Titans (2000) – The true story of a newly appointed African-American coach and his high school team on their first season as a racially integrated unit.
26. Beaches (1988) – A privileged rich debutante and a cynical struggling entertainer share a turbulent, but strong childhood friendship over the years.
27. The Blind Side (2009) – The story of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All-American football player and first round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman and her family.
28. The Devil Wears Prada (2006) – A smart but sensible new graduate lands a job as an assistant to Miranda Priestly, the demanding editor-in-chief of a high fashion magazine.
29. Amadeus (1984) – The incredible story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, told by his peer and secret rival Antonio Salieri – now confined to an insane asylum.
30. In the Arms of an Angel (2013) – Jem and Chris fall head over heels in love but Jem dies unfortunately during childbirth. Chris is left alone depressed and out of it. Jem’s ghost returns from the dead to play matchmaker between Chris and Britney, the single mother who just moved in next door.
31. Get Out (2017) It’s time for a young African American to meet with his white girlfriend’s parents for a weekend in their secluded estate in the woods, but before long, the friendly and polite ambience will give way to a nightmare.
32. Fences (2016) A working-class African-American father tries to raise his family in the 1950s, while coming to terms with the events of his life.
33. hidden Figures(2017) The story of a team of female African-American mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the U.S. space program.
34. Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004) Michael Moore’s view on what happened to the United States after September 11; and how the Bush Administration allegedly used the tragic event to push forward its agenda for unjust wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
35. Sicko (2007) A documentary comparing the highly profitable American health care industry to other nations, and HMO horror stories including shotgun deaths.
